Sambusa

This sambusa recipe is my version of a Somali dish that I learned by watching friends around Ramadan. These sambusas are really good, and I can't stop eating them. They are served during Ramadan, weddings, parties, or just because! Since I am married to a Somalian man, I learned to cook a few things he loves.

Ingredients

  • *2 tablespoons olive oil
  • *1 small onion, finely chopped
  • *1 leek, washed and chopped
  • *1 clove garlic, minced
  • *2 pounds ground beef
  • *2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • *2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • *1 teaspoon salt
  • *1 teaspoon pepper
  • *1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • *1 tablespoon water, or as needed
  • *1 (14 ounce) package spring roll wrappers
  • *1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Directions

Step 1

Collect all the necessary components.

Step 2

Warm olive oil within a large pan over medium-low flame. Incorporate the onion, leek, and garlic; sauté until the onion becomes translucent. Introduce ground beef; continue cooking until the meat is partially browned.

Step 3

Incorporate cumin, cardamom, salt, and pepper; blend thoroughly. Keep cooking until the beef is fully cooked through and crumbled. Take the pan off the heat source.

Step 4

Combine flour and water in a small bowl to create a thin glue. Taking one wrapper at a time, shape it into a cone.

Step 5

Stuff the cone with the beef preparation, secure the top, and seal using the flour glue. Continue this process until your ingredients or wrappers are finished.

Step 6

Preheat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 365 degrees F (170 degrees C). Ensure there is sufficient oil to completely cover the sambusas. Deep-fry a few pieces at a time until they reach a golden brown hue.

Step 7

Transfer them to a plate layered with paper towels to remove excess grease.
