Ingredients
- *16 Boston Bibb or butter lettuce leaves
- *1 pound lean ground beef
- *1 tablespoon cooking oil
- *1 large onion, chopped
- *¼ cup hoisin sauce
- *2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
- *1 tablespoon soy sauce
- *1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- *2 teaspoons minced pickled ginger
- *1 dash Asian chile pepper sauce, or to taste (Optional)
- *1 (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, drained and finely chopped
- *1 bunch green onions, chopped
- *2 teaspoons Asian (dark) sesame oil
Directions
Step 1
Organize all of your components.
Step 2
Carefully wash individual lettuce leaves, dry them gently to avoid breakage, and put them aside.
Step 3
Heat oil in a large skillet on medium-high. Brown the ground beef, breaking it into small pieces, for about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the grease, and set the meat aside in a bowl.
Step 4
In that same pan, sauté the onions until they become soft, which should take about 5 to 7 minutes.
Step 5
Combine the hoisin, garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, and chili paste until mixed. Add the water chestnuts, scallions, sesame oil, and cooked beef, then stir for roughly 2 minutes until the onions soften.
Step 6
Arrange the lettuce leaves around the perimeter of a large dish and place the meat mixture in the middle.
